The Mitchell Family of Merriott
In 1653 Catharine Mitchell, Daughter of widr Mitchell of Merriott,
married Robert Moore (a son, Robert, was born in 1655). Several marriages
& baptisms followed, with the spelling of the surname mostly as
MICHELL. There were plenty of mentions of the name throughout the
records.
Two Mitchell males are mentioned in the Hearth Tax lists for
Merriott 1664 - 5:
Nicho. Mitchell & Tho. Mitchell.
The Somerset Record Office has the following items:

DD\X\DGE/2 A Volume of Transcripts of
Documents found at Court Farm, relating mainly to the Mitchell family. It
includes some photocopies of originals.
DD\X\DGE/2/1 which is Probate of the will of John Mitchell of Merriott,
husbandman, Will 1654, proved 1655
Q/SR/203/15 Examination. Evidence given by James Mitchell of
Merriott who says that he was committed by Sir Edward Phelipps for detaining a
warrant for treason.
Josias Stone and Joseph Gardner carried him back to Haselbury to Gardner's house
and made him pay out thirty shillings, of which twenty four shillings was paid
by Robert Bull and Mitchell's wife paid the rest. JP: Sir Edward

Q/SR/216/2: Information. Evidence
given by Mary Brookes of Merriott, spinster, in a case concerning James
Mitchell and Matthew Langdon, both of Merriott, who arrested Mary Brookes
without a warrant and held her prisoner at the Rose and Crown Inn at South
Petherton. JP: William Hilliard. Dated: 20 May
1700.
Q/SR/308/361: Information. Evidence given by John Mitchell of
Merriott in a case in which he alleges he was assaulted and his waistcoat pocket
stolen while in a public house in Glastonbury. Dated 27 Nov 1740.
