Old Photographs from Kathleen Williams

Kathleen Williams, nee Haines, has sent in these photographs of houses in Church St, Merriott.   Kathleen's father, Arthur Reginald Haines, was born in Hinton St George, but his parents, Robert & Susan Haines, moved to Merriott sometime before the 1901 census.  Robert & Susan Haines had 7 children in all.  Daughter Louisa remained single, caring for both her parents until their deaths - Susan (nee Harris) in 1927, and Robert in 1940. Their son Arthur was severely wounded in WW1 . He came home to marry Evelyn Denslow. They had two daughters - Lilian and Kathleen.

Another son, William, died in 1915.  He had been in the army, but had contracted tuberculosis.  Son Ernest was also in the army, and died in 1911.  Son George joined the Navy, and came home from the war safely, later marrying.  Other daughters Annie & Rose married.

Robert Haines lived in Cottage No 1 in Church Street.  Cottage No 2 was joined at the back of the Kings Head Pub, and Louisa Haines lived in both No 1 and No 2 at different times.

Thankyou Kathleen, for sharing your Merriott story and pictures.
