Osbornes in late 17th and 18th Century Merriott

Earliest Records

The Osbornes arrived in Merriott towards the end of the 17th century. The first Parish Register record was the baptism of Mary, daughter of Alexander Osborne, born in Norton Sub Hamdon, and his wife Mary in 1692. The surname was sometimes spelt OSBAND during the 18th century. The baptism of Alexander & Mary's first son Alexander (born about 1687) does not appear in the Merriott records.

Alexander can be found in the lists of the The Monmouth Rebellion, as a "rebel, not taken", abode Merriott - so he must have been living in Merriott by 1685, and must have escaped capture, otherwise he would have appeared on other records and presumably been sentenced to death or transportation to the West Indies.

Virtually every person of surname OSBORNE living in Merriott in the 19th century has been shown to a descendent of Alexander & Mary.

Just as well Alexander was "not taken" during the Monmouth Rebellion, or there would be a lot fewer OSBORNEs in the world today!
