Back to: Osborne Index Page Osbornes from Merriott to Guernsey, mid-1800sThe farms of the Channel Islands were known to recruit seasonal workers from the English mainland. With the experience Merriott people had in agriculture and market gardening, and difficulty in finding sufficient work locally, some people may have worked on Guernsey or Jersey for a few months of the year. Others settled permanently on the islands - this group are easier to trace. 1. John Osborne & Elizabeth Pattemore 2. Henry Osborne & Grace Brown 3. Samuel Osborne & Susan Lawrence
(1) John OSBORNE/Elizabeth PATTEMORELiving at Half Way House, Banques Road, St Sampson, at the time of the 1881 census. John listed as a Carter; Mary as a Grocer. This couple married in Merriott on 10 September 1844. John was the son of John Osborne & Elizabeth Lawrence; Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Pattemore & Eliza Trask. Several of Elizabeth's brothers also emigrated to Guernsey. Children:
(2) Henry OSBORNE/ Grace BROWNLiving at Victoria Terrace No 2, St Sampson, Guernsey, at the time of the 1881 census. Henry listed as a stone breaker. Henry was born 14 March 1842, son of Agnes OSBORNE. Henry married Grace BROWN (born about 1848, Haselbury, Somerset) at Haselbury sometime before 1869. Their first two children were born in Merriott; the next five in "England"; the eighth, Alfred Joseph OSBORNE, on Guernsey on 29 Nov 1881. Alfred Joseph OSBORNE married Mabel Alberta McCLEAN. Mabel was the daughter of Charles McCLEAN born about 1849 at St Helier, Jersey, and Sarah WEBB, born about 1853 at St Peter Port, Guernsey. Sarah WEBB was the daughter of George WEBB, born about 1818, and Sarah OSBORNE, baptised 18 Oct 1812 in Merriott!! See: Webb My relationship calculator tells me Sarah OSBORNE was the half-aunt of John OSBORNE mentioned in (1) above. Sarah (bapt 1812) was the daughter of another John OSBORNE (bapt 1765) via his second marriage, while John (1820) was the grandson of John OSBORNE (bapt 1765) via his first marriage. Quite probably their both being on Guernsey for the 1881 census was a coincidence! (3) Samuel OSBORNE/ Susan LAWRENCESamuel OSBORNE, (baptised 4 May 1834, Merriott) married his cousin Susan LAWRENCE (born 11 July 1838, Merriott) at St Peter Port, Guernsey, on 30 Nov 1856. Samuel & Susan OSBORNE then emigrated to New South Wales, Australia, arriving in Sydney on the "Fitzjames" on 28th July 1858. See: Osbornes to New South Wales Samuel was the son of William OSBORNE (bapt 6 March 1808, Merriott, date & place of burial unknown) and Temperance GREENHAM (bapt 15 May 1809, Merriott, buried 15 Aug 1841, Merriott). Immigration records show Samuel declared both parents were dead. We wonder if William OSBORNE died in the Channel Islands. Susan LAWRENCE was the daughter of Luke LAWRENCE and Sarah OSBORNE (Sarah being sister to William OSBORNE mentioned above). Luke & Sarah LAWRENCE also emigrated to New South Wales, Australia. See: Lawrence to Australia Both Luke & Sarah are listed on the 1841 & 1851 censuses for Merriott. They had fifteen children, of whom three were named Luke and four were named Samuel.
